Thunderball, an evening of James Bond takes place Saturday night, September 20th at 8PM at The Annex 1st Ave NE.
Tickets are available for $10 at Cliché, but get 'em quick because this is going to sell out. Sip a custom Bond cocktail at 8pm and enjoy a "delightful earful" of 60s vinyl spun by Tim Ritter (Bella Koshka's bassist) & Christian Fritz before the live music starts at 9pm with Mercurial Rage, Bella Koshka, and Revolver. There will be Bond movie clips looping all night, Bond Girls styled by Eclecticoiffeur, and a Best-Dressed contest photographed by the Minneapoline.

Architecture For Humanity Minnesota To Host Fundraiser for Twin Cities Homeless Locker Project
HowWasTheShow.com is helping to spread the word about Architecture for Humanity Minnesota's latest design-build project, The Twin Cities Homeless Locker Project. I hope you can join AFH for a fundraiser for the project on Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 7PM at the Bedlam Theatre on the West Bank in Minneapolis. Admission is $10 ($5 for students.)
The event will feature a silent auction, live music from Aviette, Derailleur and The Serfs and DJ sets from DJ Christian Fritz and DJ Terrence Jerome.

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY MINNESOTA TO HOST FUNDRAISER FOR TWIN CITIES HOMELESS LOCKER PROJECT
Minneapolis, MN August 12, 2008 – Architecture for Humanity Minnesota (AFH MN), a chapter of Architecture for Humanity International (AFH), is a group of local designers who volunteer their time and talents to provide architectural solutions to humanitarian crisis and bring design services to communities in need. Since its founding in January 2005, AFH MN has provided design services for community centers, schools, and a memorial garden in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, and Minnesota.
For the first time, AFH MN is taking on its own design-build project, the Twin Cities Homeless Locker Project, to address the needs of homeless individuals to have a secure storage location for personal belongings that they can access as needed. AFH MN and The American Institute of Architects Minnesota Housing Advocacy Committee teamed up through the Search for Shelter workshop in February 2008 to design the lockers. The first site in the Twin Cities for the installation of 20-30 lockers will be at Simpson Housing Services in Minneapolis.
AFH MN is now raising funds to build this set of lockers and for a second set in a future location in St. Paul. Members of AFH MN will join homeless individuals to build and install the lockers at Simpson this fall. On September 12, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., AFH MN will host a fundraising event at the Bedlam Theatre in Minneapolis with a silent auction and musical performances by The Serfs, Derailleur, Aviette, DJ Christian Fritz, and DJ Terrence Jerome.

Rock The Vote Takes Over ‘The Electorate Fetus’ for a Political Happy Hour
In-store voter registration and other activities will take place during the Republican National Convention
MINNEAPOLIS -- From Sept. 2-4, during the Republican National Convention, The Electric Fetus will be acting like The Electorate Fetus, with the help of the League of Women Voters and Rock the Vote. From 3-6 p.m. on those days, it will be a regular rock and role call, as the iconic record/cd and gift shop pledges to register 1,000 new voters. It will be made easy with the help of Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters, who will have staff on-hand to register new voters and help all voters find out more about their polling places. Even if you are already registered to vote there are plenty of reasons to stop by and see your friends at the Fetus.
Staging a Movement: A variety of bands will be playing special in-store performances to support The Electorate Fetus Political Happy Hour events. The shows will take place Tuesday through Thursday and the lineup will be announced soon.
Sound(off) Check: The Fetus is offering an open mic to anyone interested – including the candidates, who have been invited – in discussing the importance of voting. The forums will take place between band sets. Political candidates or their representatives will have microphone priority and certain restrictions apply (obviously). Bring your guitar, a beat, or just yourself and be heard.
Rocking Refreshments: The Fetus will be offering cookies and juice to anyone who stops by to take part in The Electorate Fetus events.
Political Records: During the three-day span, the Fetus will be naming 10 important political albums of all time and will feature them 20 percent off, with a portion of each sale going to support the Rock the Vote movement. The 10 albums will be announced this week and will be available for sale both online and in the store.

RT Rybak proclaims Friday, June 13th Electric Fetus Day
At a recent Nada Surf show at First Avenue, Matthew Caws called us lucky to have one of the best record stores in the world right here in the Twin Cities. That record store is the Electric Fetus, and this week it celebrates its 40th Anniversary. (They've got a few years to go to catch up with me, but they're damn near as old as I am.)
In honor of the occasion, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has proclaimed this Friday, June 13 Electric Fetus Day. This coincides with the 40th anniversary concert at First Ave.
Atmosphere and Brother Ali play an in-store at Electric Fetus on Tuesday, June 10th to kick off the anniversary sale.

This is a private event. Customers will only be admitted with a pass issued by The Electric Fetus – 1 admission per pass. The passes for this event are completely free and will all be given out on a first come, first serve basis at The Electric Fetus when the store opens at 9 AM on Tuesday, June 10th – 1 pass per customer. No exceptions. This event is strictly limited to 350 people.
On the day of the event, the store will be open for business from 9 AM until 9 PM as usual. At 9 PM the store will be closed and then re-opened again from 9:15-11 PM, admitting only those with passes for the event. Atmosphere and Brother Ali will perform a short set together at 9:30 PM. Attendees of this event will be able to shop before and after the event until 11 PM. Just as devil horns are forever linked with rock ‘n roll, it’s only natural that HowWasTheShow.com 6 Year Anniversary Party would somehow end up Friday, June 6th (6/6).
The HowWasTheShow staff picked some of their favorite bands playing Twin Cities stages this year, asked them to play our party, and ended up with a lineup that’s heavy on the rock, but since when was that ever a bad thing?
Come out to The Turf Club on Friday June 6th to see The Haves Have It, The 757s, The Evening Rig, Dallas Orbiter and The Wars of 1812. You will be rocked from start (Wars of 1812 play first so the hard working band can play a gig in Wisconsin early the following day) to finish (The Haves Have It will tear the stage up to end the night, if there’s anything left of by then.) It’s advised you hold onto your hat if you wear one.
If there weren’t enough 6’s for you already. It’s also 6 bucks at the door. (That’s $1.20 per band!)

David de Young on the Haves Have It
The Haves Have It do indeed have it, and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. . . known for tearing up the stage with their dynamic and engaging rock shows. [Portia] Richardson is bad ass in a similar way to Ouija Radio front woman Christy Hunt. Both women are blonde bombshells, and neither has any qualms about rocking hard and ripping it up on guitar. In Richardson’s case, raw power seeps from her pores without the slightest likelihood she’d ever be accused of acting like a Stooge. The tough rock front woman quality she possesses is something I’m still searching to find the words for. To call it post-feminist is a cop out. (Read full review.)
Pat O’Brien on The 757s
First things first: These guys are capital-L Loud. The music, which is a mix of The Replacements ragged thunder and The Who’s jetliner roar, ends up sticking in your grey matter almost immediately. It’s exceptionally catchy and it’s obvious these guys aren’t in it for the money anymore – there’s not even a whiff of last-gasp desperation – they’re doing this for the fun of playing loud, live music and everyone in the room is a benefactor. These guys are definitely a band to watch (and watch often) in 2008. (Read full review.)
Bob Longmore on The Evening Rig
[The Evening Rig] reveled in their songs. The last time I saw the band was their first show opening for Lucero. While the songs were always catchy and played with passion, the 18 months in-between have instilled brash confidence in the band. Although some of the countrified and delicate guitar interplay heard on the record is lost live, lead singer Jason Miller still has one of the best screams of any front man in town — a scratchy, from the bottom of the gut wail that can rise above any amount of guitar fuzz. Pat O’Brien on Dallas Orbiter
Dallas Orbiter are one of my favorite new bands of late. Their new album, Motorcycle Diagrams, will be in heavy rotation in my car’s CD player for quite some time—I can’t stop listening to it. I think part of the reason lies in the fact that they don’t stick hard and fast to any one genre. . . On this night, the band was space rock-ish, but pretty funky (and lead singer Mark Miller writes killer—and I mean killer—hooks). The songs were all at their core, pop songs, but they had been tweaked, prodded and had additions built onto them, giving each song its own rich texture and undeniable magnetism. (Read full review.)
Jon Behm on The Wars of 1812
Only about a half a year ago I caught the Wars of 1812’s debut Twin Cities’ performance. It was a modest event at the lovely 331 Club, a high quality, but unfortunately poorly attended show. Ever since that evening, the four young band members (and roommates) have been hard at work creating the buzz that is starting to make them a household name amongst local music lovers. While some of this newfound recognition can be attributed to press, word of mouth and even pure luck, none of these things would have mattered if the Wars weren’t dealt a pretty good hand of musical talent to begin with. Still seeking 24 Bar on Hennepin Memorabilia
I finally got a frame for this 14-year-old piece of history that had been rolled up for years in my basement. And this evening I took a stab at taking a photo of it that might help motivate people to dig up some of their own 24 Bar photos and memorabilia.
The poster you see on this page, if my memory serves me, was assembled by Kevin ____, lead singer of the Minneapolis band Pop Smear, who played on the bill the second to last day of the bar's operation, Saturday, February 26th, 1994.
The 24 Bar on Hennepin (along with the historic Berman Buckskin Building) was demolished shortly thereafter to make way for the US Bank building which now stands in its stead. Sadly, this was about 2-3 years before people began self-documenting the music scene on the internet so there are next to no photos on the interwebs (that I have been able to find anyway) of the venue itself or the bands that used to play there.
I and a few others have soldiered away the past couple years getting at least a few basic facts posted to the Minnewiki entry for the 24 Bar, and
if your band played there, I encourage you to also add its name to the list.
If you are aware of any webpages that have links to 24 Bar-related info, please leave in the comments. Or feel free to send info or anecdotes to me at david[at]howwastheshow.com and I'll make sure they are filed away safely so those fab kids from the future won't have to use their Way Back Machines just to get at them.
